چکیده

Listeriosis is a bacterial disease caused by different Listeria species; among these Listeria monocytogenes being the most pathogenic species to small ruminants. The other two species, the so called Listeria ivanovii and Listeria innocua are less frequently implicated in disease of animals. Listeriosis is most prevalent during spring and winter seasons. Soil contamination and ingestion of contaminated silage are the primary modes of transmission. Poor quality silage, a pH greater than 5.5 is commonly implicated and accounts for listeriosis often being referred to as “silage disease”. Both host management and the pathogen itself has different contributions for the occurrence of the disease. The clinical manifestations of listeriosis in small ruminants are usually severe and include abortion, meningoencephalitis and neonatal septicemia. The great effect of listeriosis in small ruminants and cattle is due to the consequence of severe damage on brain. Those diseases affecting the nervous system such as rabies, gid (coenurosis or sturdy), scrapie and pregnancy toxemia should be differentiated from listeriosis. Silage feeding should be discontinued if an outbreak of listeriosis is confirmed. In the case of abortion, isolation of aborting does and ewes from their offspring reduces further infection of the dam. The recommended drugs used for treatment of listeriosis include Oxytetracycline, penicillin-G and Dexamethasone.

Listeria monocytogenes infection in ruminants: Is there a link to the environment, food and human health? A review.

Listeria (L.) monocytogenes is widely distributed in the environment, but also has the ability to cause serious invasive disease in ruminants and humans. This review provides an overview of listeriosis in ruminants and discusses our insufficient understanding of reservoirs and possible cycling ofL. monocytogenes between animal and human hosts, food and the environment. It indicates gaps in our ...

Rhombencephalitis Caused by Listeria monocytogenes in Humans and Ruminants: A Zoonosis on the Rise?

Listeriosis is an emerging zoonotic infection of humans and ruminants worldwide caused by Listeria monocytogenes (LM). In both host species, CNS disease accounts for the high mortality associated with listeriosis and includes rhombencephalitis, whose neuropathology is strikingly similar in humans and ruminants. This review discusses the current knowledge about listeric encephalitis, and involve...

The spread of pathogens through trade in small ruminants and their products.

While the international trade in small ruminants and small ruminant products is small relative to the trade in bovine, swine and poultry products, it is still economically important. In addition to wool, it includes some unique products (such as goat and sheep milk cheeses, cashmere fibre and karakul pelts) and the sheep/goat meat trade plays a large part in sustaining livelihoods in several re...

Histopathological and molecular characterization of encephalitic listeriosis in small ruminants from northern Paraná, Brazil

Listeriosis is a disease primarily of ruminants caused by the Gram-positive bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. Ruminants either demonstrate manifestations of the encephalitic, septicemic, or reproductive form of listeriosis. The pathological and molecular findings with encephalitic listeriosis in a 5.5-month-old, male, mixed-breed goat and a 3-year-old Texel-crossed sheep from northern Paraná, B...

Identification of the first case of atypical scrapie in Japan

A Corriedale ewe was confirmed as the first atypical scrapie case during an active surveillance program for transmissible spongiform encephalopathies in small ruminants in Japan. The animal was homozygous for the AF141RQ haplotype of PRNP. The animal showed clinical neurological signs possibly due to listeriosis before culling. Western blot analysis showed an unusual multiple banded pattern wit...
